'If fonts are iconic, they also have memory. somehow they remember every message that travels through them. They recall the things they were once asked to say. And over time, they take on the character of those collective meanings.'
This was a quote from a brief that we were given by our tutors, on typography, Initially i didn't quite understand it , but when you stop and consider it its not the type remembering the message it once gave us, its relating that text with some product or message that we have stumbled across and held in some unimportant part of our brain just a footnote at the back. But as a designer that message that people relate with that text is so vital, i need to be aware of these subtleties and messages. open my eyes, bring that footnote to the front, and file it properly, and make concious choices of which relate to those past messages within that txt.

Oscar Wilde
'Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known.'
i think i may contradict this quote but simply because everything we do is so influenced by previous artistic people, yes we all have our own styles and thoughts preferences, but surely they are socialised to an extent. Girls love pink because they were subjected to it so much more, its a crude example but no one can deny that its almost built into us. And we can be aware and rebel against the social boundaries but at the end of the day you cant escape it. Individualism? is there such a thing?
Marcel Duchamp
'I have forced myself to contradict myself in order to avoid conforming to my own taste.'
I think the world is in need of some contradiction, some reflection, someone to question us. Ask people why? because i'd love to know how this whole design thing works, why is ariel seen as childlike? coz it has no feet? like a classic san serif, what makes us think that text without feet is a lower class? i'm going off on a tangent, but can you understand as to what im getting at, we need to contradict ourselves as a collective being how amazing would it be to start our consciousness again, wipe the slate clean take away all our associations, our socialised manners. i supposed what im getting at is i don't want to confirm tastes and social expectations but i don't think i have a choice, visual communication highlights and focuses on those assumptions. and i have to work within them. or completely contradict them to be ironic. Booooo!
The Dadaists
'It’s not Dada that is nonsense--but the essence of our age that is nonsense.'
Need i say more... nonsense!

60 million postcards
'I love paper! Everything begins on paper.'
this was a quote i found on the wall in an arty pub in bournemouth, someone had written it on the fireplace in permanent marker, and i'm so glad i spotted it, its simple, and it works so well. Much like my art work needs to.

'do you want the truth or something beautiful?'
as you may know this is actually an album title, but its applies to my theme, and the world of advertising, of course they don't want the truth. Who wouldn't opt for the beautiful option...

this is a quote from my other blog on viscom.
'Its like this is the puberty stage of design I'm not yet grounded and clear, but I'm getting there, next year i imagine i'll have a cocky teenage attitude, but this year I'm completely in shock as to what the hell is going on.'

Finding Neverland
" just, what a candle snuffing word, thats like saying thats not a diamond its just a rock, or he cant climb that mountain his just a man... just."
Sally Hope
"your work reflects the boundaries of your creative thinking."
This quote really struck me, it's like someone highlighted a truth and made me aware of it. It was a moment in my life that firstly inspired me to make this blog and secondly made me question myself and i think that's one of the most important things within this business . If you question yourself you can grow develop and become better, its a good thing to strive for better, i hate declaring my work finished because it never is, theirs always something else or a different approach with the same technique or just simplify which can take your work and initial ideas to such another level.
